Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx) differs from commissioning other building systems as the focus is on how well the design, materials selected, assemblies constructed, and systems integrated all perform in achieving the objectives and requirements of the owner as outlined in the contract documents. Through a series of case studies and real-world examples participants will explore the role of BECx in ensuring the project requirements are met. Through case studies, real-world examples, and emerging trends, this presentation covers key requirements, challenges, and innovations in building enclosure design for sustainable, comfortable, and high performing projects.

Keith Simon is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, adjunct faculty at the UT School of Architecture, and a leading national expert in building enclosure performance. At Salas O’Brien, he pairs deep technical expertise with a commitment to interdisciplinary education, having co-organized more than 200 industry programs. Keith travels nationwide, teaching how building science shapes how buildings actually perform while also challenging future architects to rethink design priorities for a more resilient, people-centered built environment. A lifelong volunteer, Keith has served in the Peace Corps and Crisis Corps, chairs the NIBS Building Enclosure Technology and Environment Council, and remains driven by his passion for sustainable design, rooted in his family's visits to all 88 Texas State Parks.

Stephen Shanks is a building scientist and commissioning provider with over 40 years of experience. As Vice President for Building Enclosure Commissioning at Salas O'Brien, he possesses a unique blend of physics and building construction expertise. His knowledge and experience allow him to bridge theory and practice effectively.

Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Practice Leader for Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx), Air Barriers, Whole Building Airtightness Testing (WBAT), and Thermal-Infrared (IR) Nondestructive Method.

Active in industry standard and code development committees, including ASHRAE Technical Committees Building Envelope Performance, Building Commissioning, and Moisture Management in Buildings; ASTM Committee E06 Performance of Buildings for BECx & WBAT; AIA Nat’l Associates Community; and BCxA BECx Best Practices Committee.

Dedicated to enhancing the performance and sustainability of the built environment. His consulting services cover new and existing construction, building enclosures, historic restoration and preservation, and serving as an expert witness.
