This presentation takes a look at early-career leadership within architectural practice, emphasizing the developmental shift from emerging professional to firm leader or owner. Grounded in small-firm realities, the session explores the cultivation of leadership competencies, the basics of being in business, and the strategic role of business development for young professionals. Through candid, practice-based discussion, participants gain a clearer understanding of how early-career architects can navigate professional growth, build durable networks, and shape the operational and cultural frameworks of a firm. Topics covered include: Reframing Leadership for Emerging Professionals; Transitioning from Emerging Professional to Firm Leadership/Ownership; and Business Development for Architect. Courtney Chase Jones is a Registered Architect based in New Orleans, Louisiana. She is also recognized as a Construction Documents Technologist, Certified Architectural Drafter, Apprentice Mechanical Drafter, and serves as an Adjunct Lecturer at Tulane University.
As the founder of HUE an Architecture Studio, Courtney leads projects across commercial, residential, and preservation sectors while navigating the realities of business development, firm management, and contractor coordination. Her background extends beyond traditional architectural practice; drawing on years of collaboration with engineers, contractors, and fellow architects, she approaches each project with a holistic mindset and the ability to solve problems through multiple technical and creative lenses.
While HUE contributes to work across multiple states, Courtney remains deeply committed to her hometown of New Orleans, where she is a ninth-generation resident. Her professional focus continues to center on visual communication, detailing, continuous learning, and cultivating strong relationships with local artisans and builders.
