José Alvarez is a native of Caracas, Venezuela, and has been a key leader at EskewDumezRipple for over 25 years, where he serves as a principal and leads the firm’s mixed-use design practice. He has played a central role in shaping projects that use architecture as a catalyst for strengthening communities and urban life, including the Center of Developing Entrepreneurs in Charlottesville, VA, and The Shop at the CAC in New Orleans.
His design work also supports clients through visual storytelling that aids fundraising, marketing, and decision-making. Over his career, he has progressed through leadership roles—becoming Associate in 2007 and Principal in 2013—while also mentoring younger designers within the studio.
Beyond project work, José has been deeply involved in professional service and advocacy. He has led the firm’s MLK Day of Service program, served as AIA State Delegate, and held leadership positions within the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA) Louisiana Chapter. He also contributed to the AIA New Orleans Young Architect Forum and has been recognized multiple times by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for leadership and service.
He currently serves as a Commissioner on the City of New Orleans Board of Zoning Adjustments (BZA) and is involved with advisory work for the Tulane School of Architecture and Colloqate Design Studio, a design justice organization focused on equity in the built environment.
In 2025, José was inducted into the AIA College of Fellows—an honor reserved for only a small percentage of architects recognized for significant contributions to the profession.
